2016 Case Questions and Answers

Question 1: If we have a possible solution, should we present our recommendation as something that should be implemented for the Sioux Tribe, another area of the US (if this makes our solution strategically more advantageous), or as a national whole?

Answer: Review the charge on Page 11 of the case. Note specifically the last paragraph listing the organizations your plan will be presented to. Your recommendations should be comprehensive and have national relevance.

Question 2: If we chose another NA tribe population (than Sioux) would the judges then grill us on WHY we chose another area?

Answer: We cannot predict what questions judges may ask, it is possible they would request specifics about how your plan would benefit Doris and people in the regions outlined in the case as well as how your plan could be implemented nationally.

Question 3: The case makes mention of Indian Health Board clinics in different locations, where the patient has received care. However, we haven't been able to find information about these clinics and the Indian Health Board. There is information available about Indian Health Services and Indian Health Board of Minnesota but not about the Indian Health Board. Where would be find information about the clinics? We are interested in knowing the location of the clinics, the general services available and the professionals managing the clinics.

Answer: You should assume that the level of detail and resources made available in the case are sufficient.  Review the resources on page 17 in the case and research the National Indian Health Board if you would like more information. Remember that this is a fictionalized case. If you feel the need for more information on the clinics and services, research clinics and services of comparable size and location and make reasonable assumptions based on the information you discover.

Question 4: The case makes mention of the American Indian Patient Advocacy Program. Is this a real entity? Again, we weren't able to find information about this entity online. Thank you.
Answer: Yes, this is a real program. If you feel this is important for your recommendations, then as part of your research you should explore patient advocacy programs.

Question 5: I have a question regarding the case. Page 11 says we are "members of a hired consulting group." Can you please clarify who hired us?

Answer:  You can assume that you have been hired by the panel that your plan is being presenting to.

Question 6: We have a question about "the community-based follow-up" in the charge. We came up with two different understandings: 1) follow up individual patients, with the focus on transition of care; 2) follow up community health, with the focus on measuring outcome of success. We wonder what is expected regarding the community-based follow-up.

Answer:  community based follow-up is about continuity and coordination of care. The charge is asking you to explain how you will address the full spectrum of patient care for this population.
